Groundwork [edit]

The vocal was the group's atomic number 82 unmarried from Tubthumper, their major-label debut.[iii] It was released on 11 August 1997.[4] [5] Singer Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, before the group wrote it, they "were in a mess: we had become directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with changing that, telling The Guardian, "It's non our most political or all-time song, but information technology brought u.s.a. back together. The song is about us – as a class and as a ring. The dazzler of it was we had no idea how large it would be."[half-dozen]

Writing and composition [edit]

A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served every bit the grouping'south inspiration for the vocal; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that information technology was written about "the resilience of ordinary people";[vi] musically, "Tubthumping" is a dance-rock, alternative rock, and dance-punk vocal in D major.[vii] [8] [ix] [10] [11]

Disquisitional reception [edit]

Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Some records just demand attending: 'Tubthumping' is one of the rare few. Y'all tin spend three times the runway's running fourth dimension plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and assorted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-stone guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-style horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-similar chants that yous hear at football games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, you won't before long forget this jam after first mind. And you'll likely exist hearing it on popular and modernistic stone stations for months to come. If this precious stone is indicative of the tone of the human activity's forthcoming album, information technology should exist quite a head trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described information technology as an "irritating catchy drinking anthem from the anarchist band".[thirteen] Information technology was also chosen a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "Later on a decade and a half spent as indie heroes this collective is likely to interruption into the mainstream in a big way".[fifteen] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated it eight out of ten, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-upwardly homo pyramids on the dance floor in seconds. And you'll have a monster striking – good work, chum."[16] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared information technology as a "drinking-and-dancing anthem" and "the quirk striking of the season".[17]

In The Village Vocalisation'southward Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the 2nd-best single of the yr.[xviii] Australian radio station Triple J ranked information technology No. 3 in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the same year.[xix] Writer Bruce Pollock included information technology in his 2005 volume "The 7,500 Most Of import Songs of 1944-2000".[20] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Stone 's 2007 listing of the "20 Most Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. viii in the magazine's 2011 list of the "Tiptop ten Ane-Striking Wonders of All Time".[22]
